Wilson Sensation is a popular multifilament string containing elastic nylon fibers that reduce dampening vibrations for enhanced comfort and playability. It features two outer wraps applied in opposite directions to improve durability. Sensation lives up to its established arm-friendly reputation at a great value for multifilament. Perfect for players of all levels.

Solinco Heaven Hyper-G

Price: $37
Color: Green

Solinco Hyper-G is a newly developed, high performance co-polyester string designed to offer playability and control while generating intense spin and bite. Developed for an ATP top 50 player, this medium firm string enables big hitters to take massive cuts at the ball without having to worry about overhitting. Topspin players who like hitting balls that dive sharply and explode off the court will love this string.

Solinco Tour Bite

Price: $37
Color: Silver

Solinco Tour Bite was released in 2009 and became a poly favorite. This versatile co-polyester string is designed to offer playability and control while generating power and intense spin and bite. Similar to Hyper-G, this square shaped string enables big hitters to take massive cuts at the ball without having to worry about overhitting. Tour Bite plays a little more stiff than Hyper-G giving you a bit more power.

RPM Hurricane

Price: $38
Color: Natural/Yellow

RPM Hurricane (formerly called Pro Hurricane Tour) is big on control and spin. This monofilament polyester is a fairly firm string, so we think it’s best for intermediate to advanced baseline players with long, fast strokes. The octagonal profile gives RPM Hurricane great bite. This is a good option for power baseliners who want the ultimate in spin, control, and durability.

Luxilon ALU Power 125

Price: $46
Color: Silver

Luxilon ALU Power is one of the most popular polyester strings on the ATP Tour and helped drive the poly string movement. The monofilament construction will enable you to take huge cuts at the ball without losing control. This is a great option for intermediate and advanced players who hit with pace and want great feel and control.

Solinco Hybrid

Price: $37
Color: Silver/Natural

Solinco Hybrid Tour Bite + Vanquish is a newly developed hybrid. Tour Bite in the mains is a great polyester for power and spin. Vanquish in the crosses is a superior, arm-friendly multifilament for touch and control. If you’ve been thinking about trying a hybrid, this a great pick!

Hybrid RPM + Xcel

Price: $46
Color: Natural

Babolat Hybrid RPM Power 17 + Xcel 16 is a great choice where you gain the best of both worlds. Gain extra spin and durability from the RPM (a polyester) in the mains, while Babolat Xcel (a multifilament) in the crosses gives you great feel and comfort. New coating resists notching for improved durability.

NXT Comfort

Price: $46
Color: Natural

Wilson NXT Comfort is a popular multifilament string giving you a great combination of feel, playability and comfort. It’s easier on the arm and features dual-wrap Xycro Micro Fibers bonded with a polyurethane coating for feel and durability.

NXT Power

Price: $46
Color: Natural

Wilson NXT Power is a multifilament string giving you a great combination of feel, playability and comfort. It’s easier on the arm and features dual-wrap Xycro Micro Fibers bonded with a polyurethane coating for feel and durability. NXT Power has more fibers than NXT Comfort giving it a little more softer playability. This is as close to natural gut as you can get.

Tennis String FAQ

String has a big impact on your tennis game—probably more than you think. Choosing the right string, string gauge and string tension impacts everything from the power you experience, the control you have, the amount of “grab” you have on the ball to create spin and how long a string will last. It also impacts the amount of vibration on your arm and elbow. If you want to improve your game, you should try different strings from time to time to see which one helps you play your best. We’re happy to talk about different strings and help you choose the best string for your game!

It mostly depends on how much you play. Generally, you should string your racquet at least once a year. Strings lose tension over time and the more you play. Some strings, depending on their composition, also wear out similar to running shoes and tennis shoes. So if you play more often, you should string more often.

Nylons and Synthetic Gut – most have a single, solid core. They offer a good combination of playability and durability. They’re also reasonably priced.
Recommended: Beginner to Intermediate Players
Our preferred string: Wilson Synthetic Gut Power and Prince Synthetic Gut

Nylon Multifilament – these are made from hundreds of tiny strands woven together, typically with a resin or coating/wrap around them. They’re also a bit easier on your arm and elbow.
Recommended: Beginner to Advanced Players
Our preferred string: Wilson Sensation and Wilson NXT.

Polyester – these are becoming more and more popular with players who have long, fast strokes. They provide control and durability, while also enabling more spin. Most professional players now use polyester (or a hybrid…see below).
Recommended: Intermediate to Advanced Players
Our preferred string: Solinco Tour Bite, Solinco Hyper-G, Luxilon ALU Power, Babolat RPM Hurricane

Hybrids – A popular stringing technique is to use polyester in the “mains” and a softer multifilament in the “crosses”.
Recommended: Intermediate to Advanced Players
Our preferred string: Solinco Hybrid (Tour Bite in the mains and Vanquish in the crosses), Babolat Hybrid (RPM Power in the mains and Xcel in the crosses).

Natural Gut – a few decades ago, this was a common string and was the choice of professional players. As synthetics, polyesters and multifilaments have improved over the years, natural gut isn’t as common for the day to day, or even the advanced tennis player. However, if you want to splurge for a string with great feel or if you suffer from arm pain, natural gut might be worth the money.
Recommended: Intermediate to Advanced Players
Our preferred string: Babolat Team VS Natural Gut

Tennis string gauges range from 15 (thicker) to 19 (thinner). Thinner strings offer improved playability while thicker strings provide more durability. Thinner strings also provide more spin potential by allowing the strings to dig deeper into the ball. The most common gauges are 16, 16L and 17. Some strings will include the gauge in their name (e.g. 125 which means 1.25mm).

If you’re playing with a 16 gauge string currently and don’t break strings often, we suggest trying a 16L or 17 gauge string to gain more feel and playability.

String Gauges (measured in diameter):
16 = 1.26-1.33mm
16L = 1.22-1.26mm
17 = 1.20-1.24mm

All racquet manufacturers provide a recommended string tension for each racquet model (we have these!). Usually a range is provided (e.g. 55-65 pounds). If you’re unsure of your preferred tension, it’s best to start in the middle of the manufacturer provided range and see how they feel and play. You can then adjust the tension the next time you have your racquet restrung. Remember—a lower tension will give you more power, while a higher tension will give you more control.
